Mason Professional Firefighters Local 4049 Scholarship

The Mason Professional Firefighters Local 4049 Scholarship was founded in 2021, and provides assistance to those students who desire to enter into the fire service after their secondary education.

The International Association of Fire Fighters Mason Professional Firefighters Local 4049 is the collective bargaining labor union representing the Career Firefighters, Lieutenants and Inspectors of the City of Mason Fire Department in Mason, Ohio. We operate independently of the City of Mason, and this scholarship is not affiliated, awarded or funded by the City, Fire Department or taxes, but rather through the fundraising efforts of Local 4049 itself.

Amount of Scholarship: One time payment of $1,000.00 to an accredited fire or emergency medical services education program of the awardee’s choosing.

Award Dates: Scholarships are awarded annually, on or before their respective school’s graduation date.

Selection Criteria: Awards are based on financial need, commitment to community service and demonstrated academic achievement. Awardee must be a City of Mason resident, and graduating in the same school calendar year of the award.

How to Apply: All applicants must submit all application materials.

Application materials must include:

  • A completed Scholarship Application Form.

  • An official copy of a school transcript and grade report from the school currently attending or most recently attended. The official school transcript should list all grade points earned and academic course work completed to date.

  • An essay (not to exceed 1,000 words) prepared by the applicant that indicates their reasons for wanting to join the fire service, any financial barriers that may prevent them from affording indicated program, and what up to this point they have done to serve their community.

  • Two letters of recommendation from a teacher, school administrator, counselor, clergy, work supervisor or coach who can address the qualifications and character of the scholarship applicant. The required letters of recommendation may not be from immediate family members, close family friends, or blood relatives.

Mentorship Opportunity: In addition to the financial scholarship, a mentor will be made available to the awardee. This mentor will be able to assist the prospective firefighter in choosing an appropriate school, and ensuring the student is adjusting well to the program. They will be able to answer any questions that the student may have.

Payments: Payments will be made directly to an accredited fire or emergency medical services education program. The awardee will be responsible for providing Local 4049 with a contact person to make the payment. If the student does not enroll in a fire or EMS program and begin attending class within 12 months of the award date, the scholarship will be forfeited by the awardee.
